Marta Gardolińska Jeneba Kanneh-Mason Joseph Haydn Florence Price Ludwig van Beethoven

Thu, Jan 30, 2025, 19:00
Marta Gardolińska (Conductor), Jeneba Kanneh-Mason (Piano)
Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) finished the oratory The Creation in 1798, inspired by great experiences with G.F. Handel's oratorios during his stay in London. The lyrics are based on the first chapters of the Bible, and the opening for the orchestra describes the darkness and emptiness before the creation. In 2009, a couple were cleaning out a run-down building in the small American town of St. Anne when they came across a large collection of sheet music. The collection turned out to be many unreleased works by the composer Florence Price (1887-1953), who had used the building as a summer house. One of the works they discovered, which has experienced a renaissance in recent years, is Florence Price's Piano Concerto in One Movement from 1934. In the work, Price combines a romantic tonal language with Afro-American folk tunes. The composer was the soloist during the premiere in Chicago. "How happy I shall be when I can walk for a while between bushes and woods, under trees, through grass and around rocks,” Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) wrote to a friend in 1810. The composer went out to parks or forests and fields as often as he could. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 in F Major, with the nickname Pastoral Symphony, is the most apparent expression of his love for nature. The first and last movements describe the joy of being out in the open; in the movements in between, he describes, among other things, a scene by the stream, folk dancing, and a heavy thunderstorm.

Beethoven and Price

Wed, Apr 16, 2025, 19:00
Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Dinis Sousa (Conductor), Jeneba Kanneh-Mason (Piano)
In a completely new manner from before, Beethoven infused his second symphony with surprising effects. The orchestra swiftly switches between the faintest of whispers to thunderous outbursts in sudden turns. Here, wild humor and dramatic mood abound. Portuguese conductor Dinis Sousa leads the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in this symphonic milestone. The concert appropriately commences with an overture: Dvorák's powerful and darkly evocative Othello – one of three concert overtures Dvorák wrote to musically portray various aspects of human existence. The young British pianist Jeneba Kanneh-Mason (born 2003) makes her debut with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. She is at the beginning of a flourishing career and performs here with the romantically grandiose piano concerto by American composer Florence Price (1887–1953) – music never before heard in Konserthuset.Jeneba Kanneh-Mason is the sister of cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason – who performed at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle – and pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason. Both have previously appeared at Konserthuset. They are three of seven extremely talented siblings often referred to as The Kanneh-Masons.

Joshua Bell

Sat, May 3, 2025, 20:00
Joshua Bell (Violin), Joshua Bell (Conductor), Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin
He has played for three American presidents, the Supreme Court of the United States and has performed at the World Economic Forum—though thus far, at least, superstar Joshua Bell has not been invited to conduct the renowned political gathering. In Berlin, he’ll work as »playing conductor« with the 100-member DSO for the first time. Just one practical problem: what will he do with the Stradivarius violin, which is worth millions? »When I’m conducting, I keep the violin in one hand and conduct with my bow,« he laughs.

Catherine Larsen-Maguire (Conductor), Musikenthusiast:innen jeden Alters (Ensemble), Mitglieder des DSO (Ensemble), Bundesjugendchor (Choir)
How about making music together with orchestra professionals? How about experiencing the euphoria that flows through you when hundreds of people get together to make music for everyone as a joint endeavour? Anyone who’d like to can become part of the ›Symphonic Mob‹. Anyone who plays an instrument or likes to sing can participate in Berlin’s largest spontaneous orchestra – no matter whether in everyday life you play in an amateur orchestra or a big band, in a brass band, or you sing in a choir or just at home. So that as many people as possible can take part, there will be – as in the past – simplified parts you can download, in addition to the original sheet music; joint rehearsals with DSO musicians ensure optimum preparation for the big day. The conductor Catherine Larsen-Maguire will head up the eleventh ›Symphonic Mob‹. The German Youth Choir will also join in for the very first time.
